The only way to be sure would be to get a lab to analyse your hops.
And even if you knew the exact alpha-%, then what? You would still need
to experiment to sort out the beta-acids, aromatic oils, and everything
else the hops contribute.
So, make that experiment. Mash for your favourite beer, and boil 4
different batches out of it:
- Your regular beer with a known good hop. This will be your control
beer.
- One where you substitute the bittering hops from the mystery branch.
- One where you substitute the aroma hops
- One where you substitute the finishing hops
This way you can judge the effect of your new hop when used in different
ways. You can also make a batch where you only use the new mystery hop,
but that will not tell you as much.
Actually, this would be a good experiment to make even without any
"mystery" hops, just to study how a commercially available hop variety
actually behaves. Goldings for the base beer and Saaz for the
experiment?
