So now that we've got a handle on the semantics issue what say we throw some ideas around for what Jr should know and be able to do?

1. For this phase can we try to list all of the things that are common to the BSDs?
inetd.conf
fstab
rc.conf...

I'm sorry if this has been discussed already, as I'm coming in a bit late to the discussion, but I'm wondering how the differences in these "commonalities" are going to be addressed. Other than pointing out that rc.conf in both OpenBSD and FreeBSD use equals-sign delimited fields, the similarities end there. This is but one example.

Agreed an no apologies necessary. This in fact is exactly what still needs to be discussed. Surely it would be great if all of our flavors had the base unixy stuff in common, but those differences are part of what make them special.

I think we all agree that the philosophies between BSD's are aligned nicely, but the devil is in the details. And isn't that what the certification is all about?

It really depends on what value you intend to place upon this certification. I am in this from the potential employer's perspective. I would like to believe that you who are certified have demonstrated at least the core competencies required to perform at the level certified. I honestly don't place much faith in vendor defined certifications, as 95% of them are flatulently self gratifying fodder and not a true indication of what the individual is capable of breaking.

I'm hoping that what we do here today will make so that a year from now when I see a resume cross my desk with Jane Doe BSD Certified, I will be able to confidently place her at the top of my call back list, and know that I'm not wasting my time in trying to find out if she can work magick in my NOC. I have terminated interviewing on numerous occasions because a prospect who was highly certified by a major manufactures' process could not answer a series of simple questions like what's the network address for a scope represented by 124.13.98.23/27.

Ultimately employers are going to have to drink the coolaid and buy into whatever certification process we come up with.
