More precisely, GNU _tbl_ will generate _roff_ code to complain about overlong
table rows when the document is formatted. At the time _tbl_ runs, it has no
idea what line length will be in effect at the time is formatted. (Further,
this is not a static value, but tends to change from place to place in all but
the simplest documents.)
