* [re-]installing lilypond in c:/program files/ exhibits this bug, and
* installing lilypond in another place, eg your desktop (c:/documents
and settings/USER/Desktop) makes lilypond run fine

I've already done both of these and it doesn't change anything.

3. download and install a new version of ghostscript for windows and run
that
to see if the problem goes away

I tried that and had no success, but ... I am not so sure if I got it right
only that LP comes with GS preinstalled so I assumed that I just move all
the downloaded files from the newer version
and replace
C:\Program Files\LilyPond\usr\share\ghostscript\8.70
with the newer version?
I assume that is all I woudl need to do.
As to proc mon I haven't tried that. I'll give it another go with a newer
version of GS and also use Proc Mon.
