In my case it was the cause of a bug report from a
Solaris 8 user, who got an unresolved symbol error at
link time and a broken build, since some replacement
modules in gnulib make use of that variable.

So, if it is not a common GNU coding practice, I'd
suggest it is prominently displayed in the bug-gnulib
manual and error module documentation.
