When we are online, we can get help from every corners on the world with identifying butterfly species. But I am interested in software based offline guide and not books which everybody have. Few days back Kishen, a member of the same group informed us that he is trying to develop a species identification software based on image key recognition from a database containing a various images of already identified species. But it is sure to take some time when we all can use it. My idea of offline guide is the one which can be installed in laptops, used in places where internet connection is impossible to get, for example - Guest house in Deban, Namdapha, Arunachal Pradesh. If the software is made module wise and updated frequently, then it will be helpful even for people interested in only a specific family. For example, Arjan Basu Roy is interested in Family Nymphalidae, so he can download only the required module and not the whole database containing information 1200 species. In this regard, in past i thought to create a database by compiling the files as a .CHM file. But with introduction of Windows Vista and various bugs and formatting errors in .CHM generation, now I have decided to create it in Microsoft Assistant Markup Language. Few merits of the file are, 1. Portability. 2. Database update capability. 3. Modular 4. Windows independent ! And even paper brochures on common butterflies would be helpful for beginners. Any comments would be appreciated.
