I was only half serious. The languages are different and this is a good 
thing, because they serve different purposes.

That being said, I think every once in a while it is a good thing to 
shake things up a little and advance the technology a few years. C++ is 
still living in the early 90s in a lot of ways. Every time I use it I 
find myself wishing it could do things other languages do better, 
despite being a strong language on its own (also, most other languages 
are themselves written in C or C++).

I think Thomas was the one who said the standards committee is the 
primary obstacle to progress with C++, literally giving all the good 
ideas a death by committee (sort of like Congress). This is partially 
why Java has been able to grow, because while it certainly has its 
steering committee, it is controlled by one corporation with public 
comments and contributions. Instead of having a multitude of 
corporations and interested parties bickering, you just have a bunch of 
people bickering who ultimately have their paycheck signed by the same 
person.
