As an example, look at the drivers for Atheros wireless chips (like the ar531x). These are commonly distributed with GPL software/software containing GPL components (ie dd-wrt/open-wrt) but are closed source products. (other common examples are the nvidia-written drivers for linux). Besides, I was talking about the license that digium has from sipro.
