Also, swimming in cold water, encumbered with foul weather gear and a PFD is
a whole lot different than swimming in a pool or other more typical swimming
hole.

You can try it sometime with the boat on the dock and someone handy to help
you out of the water.

I used to swim white-water rivers... and the term "swim" doesn't really
describe it. The best you can achieve in bad conditions is keeping your head
where you can see your target, with perhaps a little energy left over to
fire a flare or gasp for help into a radio. Or, if you're in a river,
keeping from getting bashed senseless on the rocks.
