When I lived in Hawaii I used to do most of my channel crossings at night
when I went interisland to beat the heat of the day and because of the
beauty of sailing at night.  Two of my most memorial night sails came on
these crossing.  On one crossing we left just about a hour after sunset.  As
we rounded Mokumanu off Kaneohe Bay the Moon was just rising.  The moon was
in perfect line with the course we where sailing and lit up the water like a
highway in front of us as we sailed along at 8 to 14 knots over the gentle
ocean swells.  The three of us on board just laid out on the nets letting
the autopilot guide us along.  We followed the moon beam for over 20 miles
before our course and the rising moon beam no longer matched.  On another
occasion we left Honolulu bound for Lanai just after sunset.  As we left the
moon was high in the sky and very bright.  About 3/4 of the way over to
Lanai the moon set and without any clouds and lights from the city it was
amazing how bright the stars are.  The full band of the Milky Way was
straight over head.  Behind us was a wonderful trail of glowing light in the
water.  It is trips like these that sailing is all about.
