Save Our Waterways first and argue the detail later.
Well said Will!
I have been watching developments closely and am cheered by the enthusiasm,
publicity, media attention and 'reasonable' action that has already been
generated. However things might quickly descend into an internal squabble about
what is strategically important and what are detail (though non-the-less
important tactical) issues. If we can't get our own act together we will soon
fall
out with fishermen and cyclists whose priorities might be slightly different
from our own.
We must put forward a united front with the right clear message if we want
to get wider support for the cause because, you can be sure, there will be
supporters of many other areas where the financial axe might have fallen
instead
of on the Waterways, breathing a sigh of relief. We must also get our facts
correct (it appears that the media has already been told that we have made
assumptions - but not whether these assumptions are correct or not).
If we are seen as a disorganised rabble squabbling amongst ourselves it
would be easy for those who were better organised to put forward to the media
credible 'spin' saying, "Over the last few years more than its fair share of
money had been poured into improving the waterways, which was still not enough
to satisfy a small elitist group of mainly wealthy pensioners, it is now time
to give other more deserving groups a turn."
Remember about the swamp and the alligators!
