I don't think that there would be a problem with a knife in luggage that goes 
in the hold.  (Not that I normally travel armed to the teeth I hasten to add.)  
Once luggage is checked in you can't get at it anyway.  It's hand luggage that 
they are worried about at airports.
   
  Last time we travelled long haul we brought back an electric grill in our 
suitcase for our son.  I can't imagine what the X-Ray people thought of that!
   
  However, if in doubt talk to your travel firm.

Not a good idea to try and bring a knife through in your luggage IMO 
under the present terrorist high-alert situation. Proabably better to 
just buy a cheap one when here and throw it away at the end of the 
holiday. Might save lengthy explanations to airport security ;-)
