I must admit I find it quite satisfying to start the flight with the other 
boat putting 2 ropes ashore, then go through what Bob suggests, followed by 
the suggestion above and finally meeting a boat or boats coming the other 
way, split to let the others through, come back together and enter the lock 
simultaneously.
This happened last time out with a Kate boat on the Stockton flight. It 
ended with the comment "I wish I had met you on the first day of the holiday 
and not the last"
