Having just spent a couple of months chugging round BW canals the one thing I
have seen BW doing more than anything else (like real work on the track) is
marching round with clipboards and machines checking boats.

Mind you one wonders how much their hearts are in it. One BW man found a
(hotel?) boat neatly moored between two no mooring signs blocking the canal
opposite a water point with an empty 48hour mooring 50yards away. Yet when the
boat owner (who had no interest in water but was neatly placed for a car park
pickup point) said he hadn't noticed the sign BW said OK and wandered off
leaving him still blocking rather than suggesting he move the 50yards.
Meanwhile at Western Wharf, Stratford we noted all the Hire/share boats have
out of date licenses or 'license in the post notices' and this was on turn
round day with the out of daters all being turned round.

Do you think for one minute that this boat was licenced and insured? CKP

Can't see what all the fuss is about. The banks are hard so the wash
will not do any harm. They slow down for other boaters. If BW make
silly rules that have no relationship to the speeds the canals were
designed for and that were reached in the early 18 hundreds then they
can expect people to ignore them.

If BW want to stop speeding perhaps they should employ some lengthmen
who could also look out for unlicensed boats and so called continuous
cruisers over stay on visitors moorings.
