Ah yes, but Cooper Bridge is at around 50m or 164ft(according to 
http://www.earthtools.org/) above sea level, while Ducie Street is only 
48m or 157ft.

So clearly, you go up when heading east and down when going west.

I'm actually surprised the difference is so small, I always think of 
Leeds as being much higher than Manchester and while I know that neither 
is on the actual route, it's still the way you think.  I'm pretty sure 
that's how Richard's line of thought was going as well.
