I hope no-one thought I was suggesting (above) that the Ashton is *not* safe out of school hours although it can be more interesting.
Not everyone feels comfortable in the presence of groups of inner-city youngsters, so travelling in school hours is better for them. I have also transited the canal on a sunny summer Sunday, with no problems from the kids or other locals.
