Sadly though, information on this list IS stored on a data base. It is there and available for ever to anyone who cares to look.
More worrying to me though is that it's also stored in that rather unreliable database which is human memory. People don't remember that there was trouble in, say, Kidderminster in February 2007. What they are aware of is some vague disquiet that Kidderminster is not a safe place to moor. This may be correct of Kidderminster or Kinver or wherever. But the common sense way of arriving at that decision is by seeing what conditions are like on the ground, by talking to other boaters, by applying common sense. We shouldn't just condemn a place on this list, for unless we're willing to post every time we moor safely the knowledge we glean is inevitably going to be slewed towards the negative. Or putting it another way, one person has had a recent problem at Middlewich. How many haven't? A hundred? A thousand? Yes the knowledge is valuable because you don't keep the knowledge stored on a data base for ever and ever. If it is kept in your head the more distant ones will fade and the more recent ones will be freshest. This allows you to make rolling decisions based on your judgement coupled with the info. I'm not the slightest bit interested in the fact that an incident happened one hundred years ago, but I am in one that happened one month ago. Yobs have a habit of returning to the place that they last had a bit of 'fun' until such time as they grow up or lose interest I well recall you berating me for not wanting to moor on Worcester's public moorings, choosing to moor in the hire boat basin instead. The fact that the public mooring was covered in broken glass and the adjacent walls in graffiti allowed me to make my own judgment, but based on the advice of others not to moor there. If damage is done to a local economy then, perhaps, it will encourage the local authorities (Council, Police etc) to do something about the situation but, I agree, that it would be better to register a complaint with the Police so that the incidents can be logged. I totally agree that Skipton isn't safe. I wouldn't want anyone to boat here personally; it's full of undesirables living in run-down shacks close to the waterway near the centre of town. These undesirables are known to want to keep the supplies of local beer to themselves also; a very nasty habit IMO :-))) Roger ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
