Adrian, you /know/ that is not true. I have explained it to you on uk.rec.waterways. But in case you've forgotten, I'll give you one simple example of why you are wrong, wrong, wrongity wrong. On my newsgroup reading tool, ^ acts to take you to the "parent" of the current message. This is really useful if you want to see something that has been accidentally (or even deliberately) snipped. It uses the "references" header to do that. Now when you add material from another posting to an existing reply, there is no "parent" for that material. So you say "John Smith said: ...", and I wonder "why on earth did he say that", and press ^, and get taken to a posting by someone else entirely, who happens to be somewhere else in your multi page, multi source, response. That's why I've been asking you, again and again, not to do this. So far you haven't even bothered to reply. It's a pity you need to be threatened with a change to the rules to even start to defend your antisocial behaviour.
