I don't know if you are suffering from the same problem I do, but when
my DG834G keeps going from one speed to another it eventually gets
itself into a state. All the connection lights are on, but there is
nobody home. After some time it may decide to work again, but this can
vary from minutes to hours. You can usually tell when its in this
state by going to the "Show Statistics" (that you've already found it
seems) and the noise margin (i think it is) is a very silly large
number. Hit the Router Reboot button.

What I've found is that on a variable quality line, the router will
keep trying to find the optimum speed to connect at and jump up and
down in speed. It is possible to get your ISP to fix the line
connection speed at their end. Probably safest to choose the lowest
speed it usually connects at, but if you want to have a play then
choose a slightly higher speed and see how it goes. I'd maybe go for
512 mb connection since it's a nice round number.
