The -p isn't what you want there, I'm pretty sure.

Is <ip address> on the same subnet as your PC?  It could be the routing to
the roach's network isn't in place.

Your hostname roach<serial number> must not be in your DHCP/DNS tables,
which makes me wonder if the routing is fouled up.

Can you ping <ip_address>  from your PC?
