Thanks Maurico. I didn't really expect unbiased opinions, of course. I wanted opinions and input on a topic that I know little of and I've gotten it. Your input has been very helpful in fact. Since we have no ORM exposure to speak of, it's quite daunting knowing where to begin. It's a complex topic area! There are so many options.
Example, I looked at the Active Record pages "Getting started with ActiveRecord" and while they're a good intro, it's not clear to me how Active Record simplified using NHibernate. I don't know how one would have accomplished the same thing using NHibernate. I wouldn't expect that intro doc to attempt to contrast Active Record vs plain NHibernate, just trying to show you what it's like for a complete ORM newb. One thing you mentioned was that procedures would make it much harder to change databases. Can you shed some more light on that? Obviously sprocs vary in how the work across dbs. Assuming that we're willing to maintain two sets of sprocs, oracle and postgres, is there any reason that an ORM couldn't use the procs from either?
