My experience (mostly racing) is that the genny REALLY drives the boat.  Frequently in heavy air we will let the main flog totally and just drive the boat with the 150-135% jib.  Only in very dire situations have we ever put a reef in the main.  So it would be full main with #1, full main with #2, full main (maybe dumped so as not to draw a bit) and number 3, no main and storm sail.   Chris D toy box eastport, md
