I am a total hack and was able to do the job with less than appropriate equipment.  Really not a big deal.  TF used to have some drawings, but that was 6-7 years ago.

Thanks Dave, Great picture!  Just think while you were out sailing in that beautiful weather I was out motor shopping..... you got the better deal.  An 8hp Yamaha would do me well too,   I think I remember seeing the work on your boat.   .  I know it works good, but I'm not a carpenter.  Very hesitant to start chopping the transom.

Hi, Lesley and all the rest of you.  First...a photo from this Saturday and we head for the finish line at 7.5 yo 8 knots!  Whee.  Note Mt. Baker in the background.  Another crappy day sailing in Victoria.  Regarding motor:  I put on a 8hp Yamaha high thrust 4 years ago.  After a year I raised the bottom of the cut out 4" and widened it a couple on each side.  Increased height allowed me to readjust vertical and increased my speed under power a knot to the 5.5 to 6.5 range.  The power output from the motor keeps my two batteries charged -- haven't had a charger near the boat since!  I have electric start and remote.  Had to put a 4" raise on the transom locker lid, but now I can sit on it and see over the cabin top when motoring.

Any pictures so I can see what you cut away?

I also have to say that the mod to the transom to fit a larger outboard is really a minor surgery.  I did it by myself in less than a couple of hours.  Including pulling the engine to a floating dock behind the boat, cutting the transom with a woefully underpowered jig saw, filling the void with some epoxy to try to keep the core dry, and remounting the engine.  Again by myself, a couple of extra bodies would make it really easy.
