I like a handheld, for local cruising.
Only local calls open the squelsch (sp?).
It's handy, as it can be carried on deck.
Look for one that can be used or recharged by your boat's 12 VDC
system.
On the other hand, the vixed radios have the advantage that they can be
tied into a GFS, so that one switch will transmit your location for emergency
situations.
