I can tell you how to tighten the packing gland on my 1998 c-27 with a universal m-18 . the shaft has two nuts on it and you need two large wrenches. I use one pipe wrench and one pliers type pipe wrench. the back nut (toward the stern)  loosens by turning toward the port side. you then tighten the other one the same way (toward port side )untill the dripping all but stops. One drip per min. is ok  then you tighten up the rear nut by turining to starbord. Some people are small enough to do all this from the starbord birth but I need two people one in the birth and one in the port locker in the cockpit. This can all be done in the water . Good Luck

Subject: catalina27-talk: Looking for help

I have a friend who just recently purchased a 1976 Catalina 27, standard rig,
Atomic 4, etc. Not ever having to deal with the packing gland (Mojito is an OB),
there is a lot of water coming in around the propeller shaft and a major concern.

Can the packing gland be replaced with the boat in the water? If not, how do you
tighten the packing until he can get it out of the water?

Phil, are there any tech notes in the archives about this?

Any advice would be appreciated and I will foreward your comments to him.
I am attempting to get him signed up for this list so he can ask for himself
