For good or ill, I have the swim ladder, with an opening integrated into my
stern pulpit. The ladder is a good one and I hate to give it up, so I was
thinking I could put the motor just far enough to one side.

On the other hand, I suppose I could remove the ladder itself and put a
lifeline gate across the opening--then keep the ladder in my attic and try
to explain the whole thing if I go to sell it.
