All 3 of mine (from a 73 to an 86) have some hind of plug in the mast w/ almost enough slack to de-connect/re-connect comfortably. I drilled a hole at the mast at the base and brought the wires out and into a waterproof connector down thru the deck. A watertight connector was installed outside the mast.
