We sail quite often if we're not racing with only the genoa. The boat is
well balanced.

There is a small (26 ft +/-) Cape Dory a couple of slips down from me. He
has a Doyle "Stack Pak" (I think that is what it is called) to cover and
store the main. His main sail cover fastens to the port and starboard sides
of the boom, it has a zipper down the top from the mast to the topping lift,
also has lazy jacks. It's easy, going out he unzips, attaches the halyard
and hoists. Coming in he releases the clutch and the sail drops down into
the sail cover, which he then zips to close it. Other sail makers probably
have something similar.

It's really a nice system; if I wasn't racing I would really be tempted. Of
course, I would still have to deal with the bimini or leave it down.

Subject: catalina27-talk: Sailing with Genoa ( jib ) only

Listees,
Do any of you sail without the Main, Genoa only ?
I'm retired, live 6 blocks from my slip, sail single hand 5-6 times a week.
Sometimes just a few hours twice a day. I've fallen into the habit of going
out without
unpacking the main. Sail jib only. Warm up the diesel, disconnect shore
power,
cast off mooring lines, back out and head for the gate---maybe 5 minutes.
Coming in--5 to 10 minutes to batten down and head for home.
When I use the Main it's 45 minutes to go out and 45 minutes to batten down.
I haven't sailed the Main for 2 months. I feel like I'm cheating or
something.
Next time I'm GOING to sail the Main--for sure--and I don't.
Wondering if I am the only one that doe this. I never notice anyone else
out with the jib only. ???
