Have you heard the phrase "discretion is the better part of valor?"

First decide if the pulpit wire really needs to be replaced? Is there
enough pigtail below to still get a good connection? Did the light work
before the repair was started?

Even ugly wire will still pass electrons.

But if the wire has turned to powder, then there's no choice.

It may be that the duplex jacket is allowing water to flow through it.
If so, and you keep the the existing pulpit wire, then strip the jacket
back far enough so that the wires can be looped up from the jacket to
the connections. This will keep water from flowing down to the connections.

Do the above for new wire too.

Do not try to seal connections, you almost never can. It's better to
leave connections untaped and no sealant and looped above the wire, so
that they can breath, allowing any moisture to dry.

No solder, only crimp connections.

Get a good ratcheting crimp tool!
