I'm not exactly sure where you are saying this is. measured vertically, down from the bottom of the hull, from where the foil root chord (top of the keel including the fiberglass part) intersects the boat's bottom, how far would you say the "bulge" is?
Catalina used a bunch of weird stuff to "fill in" the void where the cast keel meets the keel trunk, including fire brick. So who knows...but if the bulge is near the bottom this sounds a bit fishy, like an aftermarket keel. tf > I have a 1981 Catalina 27. There is a bulge in the > center of the port side of the keel.
