Jim,
I've done the same job on my '84. You'll love the white plastic when it's
done! Makes the cockpit look so much cleaner and bigger.
The Adhesive is much like 3M 5200. Pretty tough stuff.
To get the old rims off.....
I simply broke off a small section of the teak (pulling from the inside of
the Lip) Then with that small area cleared, I ran a heavy flat bladed
spatula along the rest of the glue to wood.
Basically, prying it off....
I had a short length of brass Shim Stock between the spatula and the
Gelcoat. It pretty much stopped any gouging I might have done..
Tedious job and it took some time. I didn't bother to scrape all the old
adhesive off the gelcoat because I figured the new ring would cover all
that.. It did.
The old teak rings were pretty much trashed.
Like I said, it was a nasty job, but I'm glad I did it...
I suppose there must be a solvent somewhere that would soften the old
adhesive. But you'd still have to break the Teak somewhere to get in in..
so why bother.. IMHO..
Best,

Subject: catalina27-talk: teak coaming rings
Hello List,
I have a 1985 Catalina 27 tall rig with teak coaming rings in the cockpit.
I want to replace them with plastic coaming rings which I own. What is the
best way to remove the teak rings? What type of adhesive is holding them
in place? Is there a solvent, safe for the fiberglass gelcoat, that will
soften the adhesive and make the rings easier to remove?
