I don't race my C 27. But if I am not mistaken, the class rules require an
outboard of a minimum of 6hp to be on the boat to meet class rules. Maybe
that is the reason they have 6hp outboards! My 27 came with a 9.9 4 stroke
Honda and it performs well. It may be a bit over powered but in bad weather
I think I would not want less.

Welcome to the world of Catalina 27s, it is a wonderful place.

I am looking at buying a used C27 in the Los Angeles area. I am in the
process of moving here from Seattle, where I had a C25. I sold the boat
there and wanted to move to a slightly larger boat, staying with Catalina as
I just loved my old boat.

Anyway, most of the used C27's currently for sale (at least those I have
seen) are in the mid to late 70's vintage. Almost all of them have an
outboard of 6 and sometimes 8 HP outboards. I had a 9.9 on my C25, which
seems adequate. Can a larger heavier boat like this be successfully powered
by a 6HP engine even in the face of tide changes?

Thanks,

Steve
