TF,
Several things..
1. You can slip it up close and personal to the clew..(don't be mislead by
the long Bitter End in the photo, it can be very compact and short)
2. You can Tie it while standing behind the clew..( Unless one is Very
Expert in knot tying, You have to turn backwards)
3. Most folks tie a Bowline with a BIG loop ..(that Loop and know attached
wraps around the shroud.. A small hitch is more likely to pop over it)
4. The Bowline is very insecure ( No matter what salty types say,, The
bowline was designed for Hemp ..Not for Man Made fiber.. I believe Climbers
would never use a Bowline)
One can "Shake out" a Bowline pretty easily.. Tie one, hold the
Standing Part vertical above the knot and Shake up and down.. Often it will
FALL apart.
The only way I would tie a Bowline would be to Secure it by putting a Half
Hitch in the bitter end or Whipping it to the standing part.
The Bowline IS good when one needs to tie a BIG LOOP.. such as a Man
Overboard retrieval line.. But I sure would secure it before throwing it to
a drowning man...
Whew, My head hurts
Ralph
