This may be a favorite subject for some. It is my turn to go through this process
1. My "Plan" is to only replace both Main cabin Bulkheads (P & S) Traditional layout, '75 Standard Rig 2. My Plan is to ONLY replace the Teak Ply with Teak Ply and nothing but the teak Ply. >>>is this a flawed plan? <<<<< Any wood techies might help others by discussing wood types and strengths here. The forward Bulkheads seem fine as well as the top of the Hanging locker. The head door and frame seem fine and the solid wood trim seems to be in good shape. So I will just be concentrating on the Aft Main cabin structures now. The fact that, during a good rain and shortly thereafter water would weep out of the chain plate bolt heads where they are sucked into the Plywood seems ......not so fine! PLUS! When we are out sailing and given the fact that we just upgraded from a 135Z% old blown out Jib to a new North 155% the bulkheads now creek noticeably. I've tightened all the screws and have found some that are simply turning in there own holes. So Who ever posted the photo of the blown mast earlier this year .......thanks (read both sarcastic and genuine with a snicker!). I have been convinced that it is time to replace the bulkheads. Just last weekend ...(after Hanna) The Chain Plate caps have been re-bedded and the stanchions have been re-bedded but that was long over due since we bought Kiona in 2006, and I bet...prior too my ownership. I believe that we have stopped the leaks for the short term and will fully re bed the upper chain plates during the bulkhead replacement (*any good hints on this mini project would be helpful as well) I'm positive there are many of you on this list that have done this If so what surprises did you find if any? The job seems straight forward to me. >Pull the old, use it as a template and put in the new. >Attach with bolts vs. screws where ever possible (I like the access ports idea behind the backrests so I could use bolts and nuts when attaching the bulkheads to the flanges) >Caulk the hell out of the chain plates and the cap. What flavor? 3m4000 or 4200? >Pick the sealant for the Teak .....humm here is another chance to help, Oil, varnish, Paintball Gun ? I think my biggest fear is the surprise!! I hope that some of you might be able to impart some good wisdom here! The boat will be floating and the mast UP! We located on the Chesapeake Bay just South of Annapolis, Md. Just to give a Geographical reference. Exotic Lumber near the Bay Bridge seems to be the local hangout for Teak Plywood in the Annapolis Area. Are there any others? If so, Let people know because We just laid out $468 at http://www.exoticlumberinc.com/ for 2 4x8 sheets of 2 side Teak 1/2 Plywood. Actually not a bad price for a pickup at their location. Add $100 +/- shipping out of state!! TomC West River, Md Kiona, #1914 '75 Std Rig, Trad interior, O/B p.s 1> if you are on the Yahoo Catalina 27 site I've copied this question and moved it here. I'd really like to get as much info as I can on this project. Plus it will be a big help to others! There have been a few insightful replies there, thanks to those folks too. p.s>2 At Some point ..... Phil.... there should be an effort (by a group of people! *-me and my big mouth huh* ;-) to pull these hints and tips together and Start a "Stem to Stern" Projects section on the C27/C270 website. Not so much Mainsheet reproductions but owner DIYS and stuff. Links are great but lots of times links go dead!
