Latitude 38 has some more details at.

It seems that Stand-By took off after the collision and had to be run down
and boarded by the USCG. I might have done the same thing to get to
salvageable water depth, and since the masthead punched a MF sail their VHF
might have been torn away.

I'd like to know more about the day's wind conditions before I make a
conclusion. I wonder if the wind shadow of the MF or a focused stream of
air off her building sized sails rounded up Stand-by. Remember this SF Bay
and its reputation for teaching hard lessons.

Yes, if I were going to give any advice to the 40-footer crew, it would be
"even if you had the right of way, don't do THAT again!"

If you look at the situation, the difference between the T-bone collision of
small to large, versus large to small, was only a few seconds. The two kinds
of collisions are almost equally likely, once you create the conditions for
a collision in the first place.

If the larger had hit the smaller amidships, it would have sunk her in two
seconds.

I posted the link but don't have any further information. It is amazing to
see how the 40' boat could hit the MF (MF is supposed to stand for Maltase
Falcon but may have alternative meaning). The later images show the damage
to the 40' boat which was substantial, but I am sure it is way less in
dollars than the damage to the MF.

I could not tell for sure from the comments, etc., but have we heard exactly
what the occupants of the 40-footer had to say? Also, there are so many
photos, but there is no photo to prove or disprove the contention that they
were on parallel courses and the smaller vessel tacked into a crossing
course with the larger.
