LEAST BITTERN GREAT EGRET TRUMPETER SWAN TUNDRA SWAN BLUE-WINGED TEAL SANDHILL CRANE MISSISSIPPI KITE (Extralimital) SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER BLACK TERN RED-HEADED WOODPECKER ACADIAN FLYCATCHER Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 7/6: 6 species of Shorebird including SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER were seen at Knox-Marcellus Marsh. Also seen were 2 SANDHILL CRANED and 3 GREAT EGRETS. 7/7: 3 BLACK TERNS were seen at VanDyne Spoor Road. BLACK TERN was reported here throught the week. 7/10: A TUNDRA SWAN continues to be seen at Tschache Pool. A rare for the area ACADIAN FLYCATCHER was found at May’s Point Pool. Also seen was the TRUMPETER SWAN family. At Knox-Marcellus marsh 7 species of duck including BLUE-WINGED TEAL were found. Also seen here were 24 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS! At VanDyne Spoor Road a LEAST BITTERN gave a rare good look. Onondaga County ------------ 7/9: LEAST SANDPIPER was found at the south end of Jamesville Resivoir. 7/10: Two adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue at the swamp on Fenner Road. Also found at that location was GREAT EGRET, GREATER YELLOWLEGS and a mother WOOD DUCK with young. At the Pony Farm on Church Road a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER was seen. Oneida County ------------ 7/9: 5 species of shorebird including 8 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS were found at the Verona Marsh on Rt.31 west of Verona. Oswego County ------------ 7/9: South winds at the end of last weeks hot spell (they were not south for most of the heat) brought a small group of late migrating raptors. Four species (BALD EAGLE, TURKEY VULTURE, RED-TAILED HAWK, KESTREL) flew by which were deemed not to be local breeders. Extralimital ------------ Only one report of the MISSISSIPPI KITES was received this week. It was on 7/5 and mentioned only one bird seen on Donato Road. The most reliable spot to see the Kite(s) has been on Donato Road at the intersection with Mapleton Road.
