That is the version of code chosen as it is most likely covering all the features that can be covered on the exam. 12.2(50)+ changes a lot of command structure so when that is on the test we are going to have some work we will need to do with some of the labs. Cisco doesn't offer safe harbor code releases for the lower series routers and switches so its a struggle to find the most stable release.
