a configure replace will of course not help when you loose your telnet
connection to the box :-)
Like Bill mentioned, the best thing to do on regular IOS is to use the 'reload
in' command, which reloads your device after a specified amount of minutes.
That way the startup-config becomes active again and you are able to log-in to
the box.
But your traffic will be hit, since the router really reloads (for the CCIE lab
this doesn't matter of course).

IOS-XR indeed does have a similar rollback functionality like JUNOS has, which
is pretty cool. IOS-XE doesn't have this configuration management, but it does
run separate IOS processes, so I don't know if it's possible to let the device
fail-over to the other IOS process when you loose your connection (also with a
specified amount of minutes for example).
