The 3 layer hierarchy deals more with the switch design rather than the
router design. In that scenario your l2 switch is likely the access layer
and your l3 switch is a core/distribution layer. The router probably
attaches at the distribution layer.


If you go look at figure 7-1 in this link, it gives a pretty good picture of
the hierarchy.

Like I said, I think the main WAN connections (routers, firewalls) generally
attach to the distribution layer somewhere, but could possibly attach to the
core layer.
