I checked the neighbor status on all my routers and they are good. I know pim is running, but I have never seen the "none" keyword in a mtrace output by itself before. I am running static RP, no autrp/bootstrap. all interfaces are running sparse-dense. the strange thing is I can ping the mcast group fine. maybe a bug with the version I am using.

thanks for looking into it.

I would guess and say the interfaces are not configured with
        pim but
run show ip mroute right the way through & check the flags
        whilst you
have a long ping running from the source to the receiver,
        could be rpf
failing most common i.e i'll only accept a multicast packet if
        it's
received on an interface that is the outgoing interface of the
        unicast
        source...

        good debugs commands are

debug ip mpacket (need to turn off mfib cef where pim is
        configured)
        debug ip pim
