I have not had any problems getting CCP4 to compile on the "pay" versions of Redhat. Out lab is currently running Redhat Enterprise 4.3 Advanced workstation. For academics the price is $50/yr which is a bargain since you get automatic errata updates and every crystallographic program we use compiles and runs right out of the box (its $25/yr for the desktop/single processor version). I didn't have such luck with Fedora when I tried that.

Dear James:

Even though we had paid for RH, I got fed up and switched to Ubuntu, which is 100% free (they will even mail you a disk at their expense). All of the crystallography software compiles and runs out of the box, and you don't have to pay an extorsion racket for updates for Free (as in GNU) software.

You can also download (or obtain) an Ubuntu live demo CD, so you can check it out before you install. I installed Ubuntu one weekend on a new drive, keeping RH intact so that I could go back. I never did.

One of the highlights of Ubuntu is the absolute ease of keeping everything up to date and installing packages. A nice interface called Synaptic runs as a front-end for apt, and (unlike most GUIs) is even better than the command-line tool.

HTH,

Bill
