An excellent question. "Halal" is like a stamp of approval on food which is
allowed by Islamic law to be eaten by our Muslim brothers and sisters. It
is similar in nature to the term "Kosher" for food which is allowed by
(Orthodox and Conservative) Judaic law to be eaten by Jews, but it is not
exactly the same.

For instance, both Judaic and Islamic laws forbid the eating of pork, but
Judaic law allows the drinking of Kosher alcoholic beverages, whereas
Islamic law forbids the consumption of any type of alcoholic beverage.

In Islamic law, anything from the sea is considered Halal (unless it would
cause death, like Lionfish or Blowfish), but in Kosher law you cannot eat
shellfish because it feeds from the bottom of the ocean and is therefore
considered unclean and not close to God (you know what settles on the bottom
of the ocean, don't you?).

It also explains why you will often see Muslims shopping in Kosher grocery
stores or the Kosher section of a major chain store, because there are many
food items that, if they are Kosher, they also Halal (like marshmallows
which, unless they are Kosher, are made from the gelatin rendered from pigs
feet).

There are many, many more details of both that I won't bore you with, but
these are the basics.

Respectfully,

Adam Phillip Churvis
