Subject: Getting a story on news, WAS: Re: The politicization of the Iraq War

I don't know, I just saw the story. I'm wondering if it will be on the
cable news shows tonight or whether Rathergate will still be sucking
up all the oxygen in the room. It might not get picked up nationally
at all, or might only be mentioned as part of the larger discussion
about Iraq.
I'm guessing it gets picked up nationally if the RNC puts out a
commercial about it. This seems to be the new vehicle for getting a
story out- vigorously employeed by both sides. You make a commercial
and say you intend to run it all over the place, then you send the
commercial to the cable news shows along with a press release about
what is wrong with candidate X's background/positions/morals, etc...
And you let the relentless media machine take it from there.
I think this is how the Swift boat guys really made an impact. They
didn't have the money to make any significant media buys, but they got
huge amounts of free press on the cable news shows that led to
donations that led to more media buys. MovOn.org benefitted from the
exposure as well, although they were already well funded.
It would be cool to try to make one of these 527 groups with a minimal
budget, make a garage kind of commercial and try to get it on the
news. It has to be issue-specific. I would pick Social Security
solvency as my issue, and I would couch it as generational warfare
with the retired class 20 years out oppressing the working class (note
my new definition of "working class"- the people who have jobs)
through onerous tax obligations to pay for their lavish lifestyles of
golf, beach leisure, and early afternoon buffet dinners.
The ad would target the children of the Baby Boomers- people still in
the prime of their careers being forced to pay higher and higher taxes
because their hippie parents failed to plan for their own futures. The
ad would then end by advocating remedies to the problem- upping the
age for benefits, prioritizing payouts based on need, and privatizing
the plan for current workers.
>Very interesting. What comments do the Kerry contingent have on this?
