Good points and good links!  Obviously this is complicated but I think
election.princeton.edu has done a good job of using multiple polls for
predictive analysis and laying out the problems and pitfalls within.

To address your blood point - I think that's why you sample the whole
of the US.  That way you avoid the circulation problem.
