I think I mentioned that as a theory at the time as well. Israel used to be America's honeypot for terrorism but they've gotten waaay to good at stopping it. Give the terrorists a new place to congregate and keep the pressure of mainland America.
Point of history: In the past, Israel was under constant terrorist attack from land, sea, and air.
