I don't try to deny the problem, however I'd rather we talk about how to fix the root problem.
Affirmative Action is an attempt to patch something after the fact, we make it look like we are addressing the issue, when in fact we are keeping with the status quo. When we talk about race relations we say we have Affirmative Action, but Affirmative Action was designed to be temporary while we work on fixing the problem with education and society. Problem is we aren't fixing the real problem, so we are never going to get to a point where we can get rid of Affirmative Action, or similar policies. -----Original Message----- From: Dana [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, January 26, 2005 9:51 PM To: CF-Community Subject: Re: Who Doesn't Discriminate? (WAS: playing the race card) welll... affirmative action is intended to compensate for this. But yes, it would be better if neighborhoods were integrated, inner city schools weren't about institutionalization rather than education, and all children were challenged from an early age. Imho negative expections are a particularly insidious form of racism. But in the meantime, there IS a problem whether you see it or not. Less of a problem than there was in 1965, when the idea of a black man being a system administrator at an agency like Sandia would be unthinkable, and less than thre was in 1975 even, when they made the infamous Star Trek episode where Kirk becomes a woman and therefore is *obviously* unfit for duty..... but there's still a problem.
