I rode Bart extensively when I was in SF last year, with no problems. 
A few suggestions.  Go to the web site at http://www.bart.gov/ and use
the trip planner, so you can make sure you get on the correct train. 
Wear comfortable shoes, because just walking from the street to the
train is quite a hike in some of the stations.  Also, try to have
correct change, because the change machines in the stations are
notorious for eating your money.  And remember, there are two airports
in the SF area, so make sure you get directions to the right one.
