An alternative no one has mentioned much is Methane. Given the amount of sh**t we generate (not bs but real sh**t), and that almost every town is looking for some way to deal with the stuff, it may be an effective and cheap alternative. The town gets some extra cash, and you get a low pollution alternative to gasoline. And given that it only requires a different type of fuel tank and a carburetor tweak, its a viable alternative fuel.
