What most people don't know is that the PIRA, the main violent group in the struggle for independence is a primarily atheist socialist (Maoist is their flavor) group. I mean seriously read Sinn Fein's plank sometime.
Yes there are Catholics involved, but the word republic means very little to those people. There are other much more sensible groups over there.
