I have no statistics, and I'll stop spelling it wrong since no one got
the "ass" in my misspelling, but...

Many of my friends, acquaintances, and those I talk to about religion,
life, and politics, on a large number of boards and lists and at
dinner, for many years, have stopped speaking out loud. Those who
still hold a pacifistic view have started to couch all their arguments
in "I love the troops but hate the war", or now see things in a more
gray-tinged world than the black and white world pre 9/11. They now
get Tim's Hitler question (if it was Tim). Who stands between them and
those who would hurt them without thought or consience.

i am not saying they are now for war (oh, very much the contrary), or
for the military (or all their actions), or for the government or the
corporations, but most or all are no longer complete pacifists, and
few have contempt for the armed forces or police. Or at least they are
no longer talking about it, even when provoked. The only ones that
still are are from Canada (less than before), from UK (more than
before), or just recently moved to America from Western Europe (few
pacifists I've found from _Eastern_ Europe.)

I'm talking about commune friends, organic farmer friends, Oregon
backwoodsers, off-the-grid folk, growers of crops Jefferson used to
grow, all kinds.
